Casting Down Imaginations: Choosing Your Influences

influence

"Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer."

PSalm 19:14

Have you ever noticed how spending time with certain people affects your mood and perspective? The same principle applies to all the influences in your life—what you watch, read, listen to, and who you spend time with shapes the thoughts that flow through your mind.

Every influence in your life is like a voice whispering suggestions into your mind. Some voices speak truth, hope, and encouragement. Others whisper lies, fear, and discouragement. The question isn't whether you're being influenced—you are. The question is: which voices are you choosing to listen to?

Whatever voices you're choosing to listen to, whatever influences you are giving access to your life, are going to determine the thoughts that you're thinking.

Consider your daily routine. What fills your mind first thing in the morning? What occupies your thoughts during your commute? What influences dominate your evening hours? These seemingly small choices create the mental environment where your thoughts either flourish in truth or struggle against deception.

The beautiful truth is that you have more control over these influences than you might realize. You can choose to limit exposure to negative, sinful influences and intentionally increase your exposure to God's truth through His Word, worship, and fellowship with other believers.

Taking inventory of your influences isn't about becoming isolated from the world—it's about becoming intentional about what shapes your thinking patterns.
