Casting Down Imaginations: Excellence in Thinking

"That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ."

Philippians 1:10

You wouldn't settle for subpar food when you're hungry or inferior materials when building something important. So why settle for subpar thoughts when it comes to your mental and spiritual life? God calls us to approve only the excellent things—thoughts that are worthy of our meditation and reflection.

Many people feel spiritually exhausted not because they're doing too much, but because they've allowed their minds to wander wherever they want to go. Mental laziness is spiritually draining. When we exercise control over our inner life, we actually find rest and peace.

Excellence in thinking means being selective about what gets your mental attention. Just as you might curate a beautiful garden by pulling weeds and nurturing good plants, you can cultivate a beautiful thought life by rejecting sinful thoughts and nurturing those that honor God.

Make room in your mind for the best things, for the excellent things. That's what you want to meditate on.

This doesn't mean you ignore problems or live in denial. It means you choose to focus on solutions rather than dwelling on problems, on God's faithfulness rather than your fears, on His promises rather than your circumstances.

When excellent thoughts find a home in your mind, they don't just sit there—they transform your emotions, decisions, and relationships. They become the foundation for a life that reflects God's character and brings Him glory.

Today, commit to mental excellence. Make room in your mind for the best things, and watch how it transforms not just your thinking, but your entire life.
